The film is based on a real-life story and is adapted from the memoirs, ‘Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through his son’s Addiction’ by David Sheff and ‘Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines by Nic Sheff. It takes us through a beautiful journey of a father and a son, their personal struggles and relationship with each other. David Sheff is distressed by his son Nic Sheff’s drug addiction. The story shows how drug addiction does not affect the one addicted but leaves a deep scar on loved one and forever strain personal relationships. It portrays the fatherly love and helplessness displayed by David as he tries to pull his son away from addiction continuously yet still fails. David feels powerless and often blames his parenting for the suffering his son is in.
Beautiful Boy was released in 2018 can be streamed on Netflix. It focuses on the vulnerability, confusion, guilt and final acceptance of both character as they try to navigate their way out of drug addiction. It is equally heartwarming and heart wrenching but definitely a must watch.
